Door Check Strap - Options?

The stock door check strap feature of my 54 Chevy truck consisted of a horseshoe spring located in the upper hinge. I was successful in replacing one of them but other kept breaking once it was installed. To get around this frustration I would like to install a standalone door check strap. I have noticed the style used on some imports (toyota) appear to be workable but would like to identify other options.

Who has retrofitted a door check strap mechanism into their vehicle and what did you use?

Bump - come on guys. Someone must have a check strap config they can share.

That isn't the "check strap" it would be the spring that holds the door open. The "check strap" is what holds the door from opening too far (early cars simply used a strap of leather). The "check strap" on a late model car does both hold the door open AND limit how far it opens.

The way your Chevy trucks door swings outside the body is going to make using the late model Toyota type check straps unusable as far as I can figure.

I remove and install those check straps almost daily and they don't have much movement other than straight in and out. They just won't work for your application.

I think you need to maybe find another source for your springs or something. I have been running the original ones on my truck and they work fine.

As near as I can tell that check strap does as a check strap originally did, hold the door from opening too far. On the Chevy pickup we are talking about the hinges do that, they don't have a "check strap" so this isn't going to help him.
