hello all.i was wondering if anyone knows if i can get steel splined inserts the same size as 50's,60's chevy door levers and window handles?i think the shaft size changes in 67.specifically Chevy trucks,i don't know about the cars.
i have cast a set of aluminum door handles and would like to have the steel spline for strength.i could have cast the splines in the aluminum but was worried about it stripping.

does anyone know if they are a standard size splined shaft?

in all my searches the only thing i come up with is billet specialties chrome door handles with steel inserts.i tried calling them but it was difficult to find the right person to inquire about the inserts.
any info would be greatly appreciated.

The aluminum splines work ok as long as you can keep them tight via a screw through the center or a setscrew..


How about forming the splines in the aluminum with a metal upsetting or displacement type of punch, the theory would be the same as a roll tap.

By making a slightly rounded, tapered and hardened punch with your spline shape, and pressing it into an undersize hole in the handle, the metal around the punch would be displaced instead of cut, and a strength similar to a forged part would be obtained.


I dont know how many of these you are making, but if you are doing a bunch, that would be something to look into.
