Hey JOHNSHENOUDA. Welding on streering or braking components is always a little sketchy. (I also had to weld the steering shaft on my SBC celica). If you must do it the way you descibed is deffinatly the best way. Being that your going to slip it inside a piece of 1" and put a fillet weld on either side makes me feal better about it. Its a different story if you were going to bevel it and do butt joint. A but joint probobaly wouldnt let go but the way you purposed IS the best way. Just make sure your machine has enough jam.
