Double Hump or after market heads

Hey guys I am looking at building a set of double hump heads for my flat top 350 thats in my s 10 drag truck. The maching shop wants $100 for the heads and then I decide how much I want to build them. I am looking at going with 202 and 160 valves with 3 angle valve job. Also thinking about screw in rocker arm studs with guide plates. The machine shops says it will cost between 450 to 500 to do this.
Some people tell me that I shouldnt spend that much on the double hump heads, that I should buy a set of after market heads or vortec heads, which would cost me quite a bit more money. Any suggestion !!!
If any of you know where I can buy after market heads for less than 600 bucks assembled let me know please. TY

what casting numbers are the heads?
I just sold a pair of 291s on ebay
unmolested heads sold for 119.00
these had no acc. holes for power steering and alt/gen
heads like these
compression would be a little high for street with flat tops
I would have to dish piston and put money in them
I got them for free off a 327
I sold them complete(springs valves rockers)

I use only aluminum aftermarket heads. Edelbrock are reasonably priced but do not flow as well as AFRs. Dart also makes good heads.

That sounds awfully steep for the machining. Opening up to 2.02/1.6 valves, tapping for studs, and three angle seats I would say should be in the $200-$250 range. About four years ago, I had the same work, plus new guides and hardened exhaust seats done for $200.

If you're doing a restoration or retro rod the Fuelie's are a "must have" otherwise you can do better for a little more money. Summit has a pair of iron 67cc heads with everything you want except the guide plates for about $640 a pair and they are new castings.

I have a pair of '66 461's I'm going to spend the money on, I'm scrounging parts to build a 60's style street machine or rod one of these days and it just wouldn't be "correct" with anything else...........

pulling studs/machining towers down/drilling & tapping for studs /core drilling and installing guides/cutting seat counterbores and installing hardened seats/blending valve bowls for oversized valves/cutting seats with three angle cutter while maintaining stem height tolerance/possibly cutting spring pad for oversized springs/cutting valve guides for positive seals/surfacing deck side of heads/assembly. impossible for $250.00. if there is a machine shop out there that will do this for that price with quality, then i have alot of sub work for them.

Drag car. Get aftermarket heads and make some power. Your engine will lose 50hp with the double humps as compared to an AFR heads. Double hump heads were good years ago but have very small ports (160cc) and flow 30 to 50 less cfm than any aftermarket head.

Vortecs are ok and are cheap, but need some machine work to get the performance to the aftermarket level and require a special intake, special rockers, and center mount valve covers which adds to the overall cost.

200 or 215cc dart iron eagles are pretty good. A 383 will like the 215cc's. The 200cc are good for a 350 or a street/strip setup.

The 195cc AFR's are about the best out there and are worth the money.

Trick flows look pretty good and are cheap.

Don't go cheap on the heads. The heads is where all the power is!!

Go to chevyhiperformance.com and look in there cylinder head flow data base. Good stuff in there.

I wish I had your dillemma. If I lived on your soil then there'd be no argument - I'd go new aftermarket every time. New Vortec heads cost $1100 here. Used.......try $800!. So that made my choice for buying used 291 fuelie heads at $450 a little easier. $1100AU is about $850US. We get ripped off because we're such a small market. Yeah, I'm happy with my fuelie's, but there's always room for more grunt and questions wondering how much better it would be had I gone with the Vortecs or even the World SR's!.

I agree with bamfasm. Anybody doing that kind of work for that price (even 3 or 4 years ago) is either REALLY cutting corners or hasn't a clue as to reality in shop pricing. The quality of work that I see going for that kind of price is pretty sad, so I'd be really leery in any case.

As far as doing the double humps, I'd save them for someone that NEEDS those castings for a numbers-matching or year-specific build. Sell them and apply the money towards a set of aftermarket heads. You will be way ahead horsepower vs. money invested.

If anyone is still looking for heads,,,afterall,,,this thread is 5 years old, however,,,,,Write me back and I will give you the complete lowdown on what works and what doesn't.Performance heads are like,,,who makes the best pizza,,,,,that being said,,,there are mathmatical numbers,,and I'm not talking about compression ratio's,,,I'm referring to stress related figures,,that make all the difference in the world.Give me a shout and I will pass this info along.
