I need a double sump oil pan for a 1966 ford 302,can anyone tell me what engine would have this, this engine was a front sump oil pan the engine was put into a 51 ford p/u with a jag ifs so everything had to be changed before the dipstick came through the timing chain cover:confused:

Mustang 5.0

I used a Mustang 5.0 pan and pickup up tube, mounting stud when I did the last engine swap. double hump. The long mustang pickup tube and screen were full of crud, bone yard parts. Old Broncos had a rear sump pan, and ford racing used to , mabe still do have them in the catalog. I don't remember where the dip stick was. I have scrounged a side mount dipstick and brazed it to an oil pan, then filled with 5 Qts and reworked a dip stick to match the full mark.

Only one small issue your early 302 has the dipstick in the timing cover after 1980 the dual sump 302 aka 5.0's had the dipstick in the drivers side of the block. So you will have to drill the block for the side mount dipstick to match the dual sump pan.You stated you had a 1966 302, the 302's came out in late 1968 which means you may have a 289 ;)

question for JeffB

I have a couple early small block fords and Jag suspensions for future projects. Does the early block have an easy to drill location for the side dip stick. It was a long time ago that I brazed the side mount to an oil pan, back then we were using Buick, Caddy and Olds engines in our builds.

An easy way to get it right is to take a 3" X 6" piece of cardboard and find a later 5.0 and press it down hard to form a template so you know where to drill. I would read this: Lokar dipstick installation - Ford Mustang Forums : Corral.net Mustang Forum The reason you want to use the Lokar dipstick is because of it's ability to clear most any header the stock tube can cause issues and it's even worse if you have the GT40P heads. This is the Lokar part http://www.summitracing.com/parts/lok-ed5004/applications/ Add this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/83-93-Ford-...Parts_Accessories&hash=item5aeb3bd6af&vxp=mtr and this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/83-93-Musta...Parts_Accessories&hash=item19f71cf6ab&vxp=mtr

That dipstick hole in a late 5.0 block is through a spot face on the LHS. After spending a whole lot of time scraping cruddy water jackets this past spring, there is no way that I would attempt to drill any hole in that block. It is an extremely thin casting with the water jacket extending almost to that area - and the chance of breaching that coolant area just isn't worth the potential grief.

In the attached photo, look towards the back of the block and at the 4th main web you will see a cast in boss. That's reinforcement for that hole (inside and out) and something I can almost guarantee your '68 block wont have. I believe Chebbies have a dipstick access riveted to the pan (also many others) - find one off a junk pan then braze or mig it in place, Make up a dipstick, then fill the pan with 4 quarts of your favorite oil and measure(5 quarts would be with the filter full).

As far as GT40P heads causing interference - nahhhhh. The problem with them is spark plug and header interference, not dipsticks. The heads fit in exactly the identical space envelope as every other 221-351W head ever made:

(Yes, I have a front sump pan on a '99 manufacture 5.0 and have plugged the original block hole:D)
