down shifting 700r

ok, im running along bout 70mph , converter locked in.
when i floor it , it just accelerates (converter stays locked in), but dont kick down a gear. is this normal ?

ps i got a manual switch to turn the converter off and on for town driving.

So..... are you un-locking the converter when you floor it? If not, it's not going to downshift when locked up. In order to down shift, your going to either have to manualy pull it down or un-lock the converter.

sqzbox , yep thats what i did (unlocked it manually ) and it down shifted.
just wanted to make sure the tranny was working properly .

does it hurt anything to pull it down while locked up and then shift it back when pass completed ( all the time leaving it locked up) ?

Shifting the transmission while the converter clutch is locked up is not recommended. The shifts will harsh.

there is a spring loaded hub on the converter clutch inside, that hub does not hold up well under shifting if clutch is locked up

Yeah, I tried that with my 88 F-bird. Had a manual switch I put in when I had a problem with the auto lock-up. Shifting with the converter locked up didn't feel right so I didn't do that either.
