Downs Mfg. (Legend Motors)

Do anyone knows what's going on with Downs Mfg. I have been trying for over seven months to get them to send me a grille for my car .When I purchased the car I was given the wrong grille. I was told to return the grille and they would send me the correct one. Every time I call checking on the status of the grille the receptionist says the person responsible for sending me the grille is not available and give me their phone mail. I have left many messages and emails but still can't get a response about something I have paid for. No one at the company will talk to me about this matter.
I'm constantly given the run around about the grille. I do understand that they are being bought by Legend Motors. I'm just trying to see if anyone else is having a problem with them.

Downs Mfg.

Butch, sorry to hear about your problems reaching who can assist you at Downs Mfg. I'm new on the forum and and new to street rodding as well. I just bought a 37 Ford 3 window coupe with a Downs body. The car I bought had a special grille made for it and it also came with the original Downs grille. I haven't seen the other grille, but the car and all of the spare parts are going to be delivered later this week. What kind of a grille are you looking for?

10mikeymike,

I'm looking for the grille for the 37 Ford Hard Top Model, which is about 3 inches shorter than the standard 37 grille. I added a picture showing the standard grille,as you can see the gap between the fender and the hood side.I think the fenders are the same for all models but the hood sides is where the difference is. My hood sides measures 7 inches and I think the standard hood sides is about 10 inches.

Grille

Butch, I'm expecting my car to be delivered on Friday barring any weather issues. I anticipate that the additional grille (from Down's) and the rest of the spares will be delivered along with it. Once I have my hands on it I will measure it and let you know I have. Below is a picture of my car - does that help to determine which grille I have?

Grille

10mikeymike,

Your car looks great. It also has the standard grille and your hood sides are larger than mine. I'm sending a picture of my car so that you can see the difference in the two cars. Can't wait to see my car at the state of your. I have a long way to go .but I'll kept at it little by little.

Even as a work in progress, your hardtop is looking good. What color do you have planned for it?

Color

10mikeymike,
I haven't decided on a color yet,but I'm thinking about a two tone color.
Maybe an orange or some light color like that.

Downs Mfg.

Jim,

Is Downs Mfg being out of business just a rumor or you know that for sure.

I ordered a set from Downs and was extremely disappointed, they were worse than the ones I had, the quality was atrocious. They are still in the boxes in the garage attic of our new house.

Downs Mfg. (Legend Motors)

Don't know if anyone has heard that Jamie Downs is back in business. The name of his new company is Downs Industries. The company has the same address as the old company (Downs Manufacturing-Legend Motors). Their website is http://www.downsindustries.com/Downs_Industries.html . It appears that they went bankrupt and came back in business under a different name . Warning to all rodders be careful when dealing with this company, these are the same people that took people's money and did not deliver the product.

Is the new company going to send you your grille? Or is this another Streetbeasts look alike.

Here's the lowdown on Downs Industries. Downs Manufacturing sold the entire business to the people that renamed it Legendary. Evidently, Downs "held the paper" in the deal. After Legendary ran it into the ground, they skipped with the Office stuff...computers, records, etc., but left everything else. After going to Court, the Downs family won their case and got the whole shebang back (property, molds, buildings, etc.) in Nov 08, and once on their feet, started back into production. They are now producing the same top quality product that they have always been known for...BEFORE the Legendary Motors fiasco. I have one of their 32 Roadster bodies on the way, and will keep everyone Posted. This whole thing has knocked the legs out from under the Downs family, but they're back in the saddle again...

Now...the question is...Are they going to honor past unreceived orders? Would go a long way to restore confidence.
