Drip rails

I'm wondering if shaving the drip rails would have any effect on the structural part of the roof? Opinions? Talking about an early 70s Chevelle that will have a 500hp small-block and be used occasionally at the drag strip but mostly street driven.

By effect I meant, will removing drip rails make the body weaker?

Probably not, but its a ton of work. The roof panel is held on at that point. You would have to cut it and weld up the whole seam. More work than its worth in my mind anyways.

I can tell you that on my 64 Fairlane the drip rail is comprised of the roof pan and 2 other pieces pinch welded together. with the rail cut off flush with the body the roof pan is completely unattached (along the cut).
It is a LOT of work, but worth the effort IMO.
I can post pictures if interested.

As long as you weld all the panels together, it probably won't make much difference in structural strength. Just leaving the stainless trim off and having it body color would help the gutter blend in too.

You will also want to do this in short 4-6" sections at a time...cut some off, stitch weld the seam, cut some more, repeat welding, etc. Cut the whole rail off at once and you will have a nightmare keeping everything in place.
