hi there i have an 86 olds cutlass with the 305 th350 i recently had a vibration in the rear when coming to a stop or just starting resulting in no motion except in reverse if i put the car in drive the drive shaft does not spin i am assuming this is my problem what would be the most likely causes and how would i go about checking for them
If the car won't move forward in drive the driveshaft is not the problem. Sounds like the trans is bad or the rear end has an internal problem. We need a better description of the symptoms. Will the car move forward in drive at all?? or just in reverse?
um i just did a lil check if i put the car on stands every gear works i.e wheels spinning drive shaft spins but if its on the ground it wont pull only in reverse ..... trans is new fluid good filter good how would i check for a u joint??
so i put the car on jack stands check fluid all good if i put it in gear it works shaft spins everything is good every gear but once it touches the ground only reverse puts me in motion?? is that a little easier to catch

Now you made it easy. If the driveshaft is actually turning but the car isn't moving, the rear end is BLOWN-UP internally. Can you verify with the car on the ground in gear that the driveshaft is turning but the car isn't moving?
thats the thing once it is on the ground the drive shaft doesn,t spin either unless it is in reverse but i cant be in 2 places at once the thing that bugs me is if the rear was blown why would it work in the air ??
i would pull rear cover off and take a look inside.i did this just because i was putting chrome cover on and found 1/2 of one of my spider gears and spring retainer in housing.rear was shot
Help me out here eric, I cant seem to remember what it is called, but i had a th350 there was a hub on the inside when it went bad it did the same thing blinkys car is doing. Had to tear it all apart to fix it. Just cant remember what its called DANG IT!!! Cole
so if we narrow out tranny and tourque converter what would cause my rear wnd and drive shaft to only have motion with no friction (being of the ground)
Cole, Could you be thinking about where the sun shell(basket) is splined to the sun gear and retained with a snap ring? Could be the problem as this is a fairly common breakage point.
Sounds like the trans is coming back out of the car, something is wrong in-between the flexplate and the driveshaft. It's going to take disassembly and inspection to find the failed part. There is no easy fix. ain:

Sometimes friction between broken mechanical parts will drive each other when there is no load against them, but will not transfer any real power. Sounds like one of the hard parts(original shafts, hubs, geartrain) to the trans has failed resulting in all forward gears being lost.

well i will drop the pan in the morning and report back withe results thanks for the info and hopefully you guys keep watching as i tear into it tommorow
hi there i dropped the pan today no large chunks there was a small amount of silver metal specks im thinking flush the trans and install new fluid and filter ?? generally how much metal is too much ?? also in regards to the u joint if i grab the drive shaft and try to move it in park i get a tiny amount of play is this normal?? and would it cause my issue
I say it's something to do with the transmission but Crosley is one smart member here that can help you out better.
