Drive shaft end play

Just put in a 700r4 in my 78 Camaro, went out to the local pick&pull an got a drive shaft from a Mustang. Needed to be 45 1/2 long witch it is. Sorta did a per install just to make sure it fit an it does but theirs no end play. The output shaft from the trans is against the base of the slip yoke.Shouldn't their be about 1/2" of play? Wheels are off the floor, rearend supported on the axle tubes, front end I have stands supporting the frame not lower a arms. For now I'm using the TH350 slip yoke.Should I have the drive shaft cut shorter?

X2^^, with vehicle at ride height or weight on suspension. You should be able to slide the Yoke into the Trans 3/4"-1" to prevent damage to Trans internals.

Everyone's on the same page here, I have 3/4" in a 4-link coil over setup, very little suspension movement up and down, but that's what the end play clearance is for.
