Drive shaft swap, u-joints???? with pics

Hey there everyone, Iím still working on our V8 beetle project, a lack of extra money has just slowed down progress.

I got our th350 trans swapped out for the 200r4, and now Iím wanting to figure out where I want to engine. That way I can weld in the engine mounts and make a new trans cross member.

Right now I have the engine sitting just about where it would be for a V8 s10 swap. With me lengthening the wheel base 4Ē Iím thinking that Iíll have plenty of room to move the engine back a little ways to make more room up front for the radiator, and also move a little of the weight back. I was thinking of moving it back 4Ē-6Ē I also am widening the car 8Ē so Iíll still have plenty of foot room with more of the trans being right there. The only problem with this is that my mechanical fuel pump will be in the way, but an upgrade to an electric pump wouldnít hurt anyways.

Here is a picture off where the engine sits now:


So I was planning on just having the s10 drive shaft cut down and re-welded, etc. So I pulled out my driveshaft to eyeball it, and thatís when I remembered that I had the 2 piece drive shaft from the engine donor truck. The back section of that drive shaft just happens to be the right length that it will move the engine/trans back about 6Ē. So I thought I was set, the th350 trans yoke fits the 200r4 so I could just pull that yoke off of the front shaft and put it on the rear with a new U-joint. Then I could throw a new U-joint on the back of this shaft get it balanced, and connect it to the pinion yoke and be setÖÖÖÖ.. WRONGÖ.. Unfortunately the two drive shafts have different style U-joints, the bearing cups??? Are different diameters on them, so I canít connect the shaft to the pinion yoke.

My question:
Is there maybe by chance a universal, universal-joint (LOL) out there that solves this problem?????? Or is pretty much my only option to swap out the pinion yoke???? If thatís the case I wonít be saving any money buying a pinion to save having a drive shaft shortened, and I might as well use the s10 drive shaft and make it the length I want. I just donít have much driveshaft experience other than swapping out worn out u-joints so I figured Iíd ask before I scrapped the idea.

Check your local auto supply. They should list a crossover U-joint. That's a pretty common item. Here is an example of some crossover joints.

By the pic,the rear section looks to be a 1310 series joint. Spicer# 5-3022X is a 1310 to 3R conversion joint. If you got 2 it would connect your ends.

Thanks guys, just what I was looking for. I knew there had to be something like that out there.

I do have another question though.

I'd like to take the drive shaft to work and stick it in my glass bead booth to remove all the rust and then paint it. To balance the shaft are they going to have to weld a weight onto it??? If so will painting it after it is balanced be enough to possibly throw it out of balance???????

I would glass bead it,then have it balanced. Just ask them to not paint it if you have a certain paint in mind. Do your painting after they're done with it. Paint will not throw the balance off. If you where to powder coat it,that might be a different story. I have seen some balance problems after a shaft has been powder coated since they have to use so much heat to apply it.

National bearing #372. Just did the old yokes to newer driveshaft dance. Bought 2 u-joints, installed them, then got a phone call while the driveshaft was lying on the concrete porch. Came back out, one of the bearing cups is gone! My Chihuahua is playing with something in the yard. That's right, and I found all but one of the needle bearings, back to the shop to get another u-joint. I've heard of the "dog ate my homework", but the dog "ate my u-joint"? I'm pretty sure the lost needle bearing is in the grass, not the dog; this was 3 days ago and she is fine, and I have'nt seen any bearings in the yard bombs. And those things ain't cheap!

P.S., The hard part will be pressing the old injected plastic retained u-joint cups.

thanks prostreet6t9, I'm just planning on painting it black, nothing special. I just don't want to see a rusty drive shaft under there.......

I figured I'd just shoot it with some epoxy primer and then I have some gloss black left over from painting my engine.

I've thought about doing powder coating because I have access to several large ovens at work, but I'll stick with paint for now.

I've never had a dog carry off car parts LOL, but I do woodworking and there have been times I'm looking for a certain piece and can't find it, and one of the dogs decided that it would be a good chew toy......... LOL
