Sorry if this has been asked before, I couldn't find anything.
I need a junkyard driveshaft to take to the machine shop to shorten and install my Chev yoke, to hook up a Chev turbo 350 to a 9" Ford rear. Other than taking my rear to the junkyard, what car's driveshaft should I ask for? I need a Ford driveshaft at least 54" long. I have the Chev yoke, but nothing for the Ford end.
Thanks in advance.
Just about any full sized Ford truck, van, or car that came with a 9" Ford should be long enough, and have the one correct end you need. The cars were '57 to late 70's I believe. Trucks were '57 to '86, when the 8.8" took over. Vans also had a 9" in the 150 series, but don't know the years.
Here's a list of various applications:
1957-1983 Ford F-100 & F-150
1957-1970 Ford Fairlane
1968-1971 Ford Thunderbird
1965-1973 Ford Mustang
1966-1983 Ford Bronco
1968-1976 Ford Torino
1969-1975 Ford Falcon (North America)
Ford used a lot of different U joint flanges on the 9 " . some should even use the same U joints as your chevy . When looking for junkyard drive shafts I ALWAYS get one with NO or minimum sized balance weigths, It makes it easier to rebalance the shortened shaft, I found an international truck Two piece drive shaft, 1/2 piece, the length and u joints for one swap. Tape measure and digital $10 HF calipers work.
And try to get a driveshaft that either has no stepped size to it, or at least is only stepped on one end. Often the stepped diameter can mess you up if the step is right where you need it to be cut.
I just did this myself only I was going from a turbo 350 to a ford 8 inch. any ways the driveshaft shop said just bring a chevy yoke and the length and they had every thing else,( new tube ) cost 200
