Driveshaft length

I just replaced my stock 305 and 200r4 in my 87 Monte Carlo with a 355 and TH350 from a 76 Monte Carlo. The driveshaft from the 76 is about 3/4 of an inch shorter then the 87's. So my question is if the total overall lengths of the trannys is the same and the longer one doesn't fit, then can i use the shorter driveshaft even if it doesnt completely fit onto the output shaft or should i just have it lengthened?

the 2004r and the t-350 ( with 6 inch tail housing) are near identical length. The same drive shaft should fit IF the engine is mounted in the same holes on the frame to loacte the trans and engine in the same spot.
