Driveshaft Lengthening
 
Hey Everyone! I didn't notice till the other day that you can buy longer transmission Yokes for driveshafts. I was wondering is this considered an appropriate way to get around having to have your drive shaft sent out to have maybe 2" added to it. I got a driveshaft with my s10 when I got it and go figure its about 2" short. So my question is can I run a longer transmission yoke to make up the difference? I will still measure the total length by bottoming the yoke out in the transmission and then pulling it out .75"-1" and making sure from there the driveshaft bolts right into the diff.

Drive shaft would be as cheep and better i payed $30 and WAS ready in a hour FOR MY K5 with no discount.Just find a drive shaft shop most citys have one!!!

We've seen this a few times, both in our 4speeds and in our industrial applications. There's no set rule. Sometimes its good, occasionally we see problems.

1) The longer yoke can change the angle of the driveline slightly when you stop the vehicle; you may get the 'stop-clunk!'

2) it will change the rpm where vibrations will be imparted; you may see vibrations, you may not.

Now Im sure you'll get people saying "I've done it for years eith no problems" all I can say to that is every application is unique when it comes to dynamic balancing. For my money; Id get a new driveshaft made with your ends, and new U Joints; and have it spin balanced.

I personally agree with AutoGear. When you use a long yoke you are moving the universal joint further away from the transmission tailshaft bushing which can increase any tendencies for vibration. I did it once when I was a youngster and it was fine up to about 50 mph but from there up it began to vibrate. Building a good driveshaft with the correct amount of room to slip is worth the time and effort.

Thanks for all the replies everyone! I think I will just buy a new transmission yoke and have the driveshaft lengthened. Seems like the better way to go. The last place I had make me a drive shaft it ended up being like $450 and from what everyone else told me that was on the high side so maybe I will try somewhere different this time.

It is always more expensive to have a driveshaft lengthened instead of shortened because they have to replace the tube and weld both ends. If you can find one that is too long all the shop has to do is cut it and reweld it. 450 dollars is more than twice what I have had to pay to have one lengthened though.

$450 ???? they are trying to screw you pardner. I had mine built and balanced at "6 States" truck supply....$190. I had my own front and rear yokes but they installed new U joints. Shop around, some of these supposed "high performance" or specialty driveline outfits think their chit don't stink and gouge the helloutta folks.

Yeah I wasn't sure if cause I didn't supply the trans yoke or diff flange thats why it was more expensive but I wanna dig up the receipt again and look it over. See if there was something i was missing.

I've heard Six States does pretty good work. :D They have really good Differential shops also.

Which Trans do you have? How long is the Yoke your using now?

We get them built from scratch here for $280, all you need to supply is the correct dimensions and what joints you are gonna use...

the transmission is a th350. Do you measure from the middle of the u joint to the edge that goes into the transmission? and unsure of the length cause I scrapped the other trans flange. It had broke from the previous owner and he welded it back together :confused:

Yeah I didn't really think about it at the time because I had been waiting so long to get the car on the road since rebuilding the rearend and rebuilding the engine. But the more I look around something wasn't right. I know the flange for the 8.8 they had to order in which was like $30 and im sure the trans yoke was about $50... so where did the rest of the price come in? This weekend I am gonna dig up the receipt if I still have it and look it all over.
