Driveshaft Question

I'm putting a 5 speed in my car, so I needed a shorter driveshaft. I found one the right size, but noticed the shaft had been cut and welded previously. The weld looks fine, but when they put the flange that holds the u-joint back on they welded it about 1/8th of a turn from where the flange on the other end ot the shaft is. Will this create a problem if both flanges aren't perpendicular to each other? Thanks for any help.

I always make it a policy to have a driveshaft made up by a knowledgeable shop rather than taking a chance on some unknown persons work. To have a driveshaft shortened, balanced, and the correct front and rear "U" joints or slip joints done usually costs under $150 so I consider that money well spent.

The yokes should be in line with each other, NOT perpendicular to each other.

Being out of line 1/8th of a turn (out of phase) will cause serious wear problems in the u-joints.

Plus it will cause vibrations, not due to balance, but from the joints fighting each other. It will vibrate even more if the pinion angle or trans angle is more severe.

Don't use it, get another shaft and have a competent shop modify it.
