Can someone explain the purpose of "dual bolt pattern" flexplates 153/168?

They allow you to use different dimension torque converters, based on OEM converter profiles. Wide pattern is based on 13" T400 converter, narrow is based on 12" T350 converter. Couldn't be easier......

Locally, many t400s had the small circle converters. About 18 years ago I bought a B&M torkmaster for a t400, it too was small circle and despite the bad rap they get it has proven nigh on bulletproof - Tow starting a K100 Kenworth and pulling out stumps for firewood as well as the usual abuse an Australian road car gets. Most of the genuine GM large dia converters I've seen were for 400 and over ci engines.

153/168 refers to the number of teeth on the flexplate or flywheel. More teeth means larger in diameter, but it has nothing to do with the converter bolt pattern. 153-tooth flywheels are 12-3/4" in diameter, while 168-tooth ones are 14". Each size uses a different starter.
