Dumped all of mine with no ill effects.
All those little rubber tubes were cracking and the plastic "T"s and connections were breaking down. Last to go was the computer controlled Quadrajet and the computer. |

What year is the jeep? It may be old enough to not have to go through testing in your state, but if it came originally equipped with the equipment, I believe it's a no-no to mess with it. I'm guessing if it has it now, it originally came with it
. I can't see anyone doing that as an aftermarket 'mod'.

Regardless of whether or not your area checks emissions, it is always a federal offense to tamper with or remove emissions equipment on any vehicle. Period.
But, unless an FBI agent pulls you over to check your vacuum lines I think you're pretty safe breaking that law. The short answer is this: You can expect higher fuel consumption, possible detonation, and no additional power. Disconnecting the EGR won't affect power. It will affect the requirements for a proper fuel and ignition curve. I would suggest recalibrating the carburetor, using an adjustable vacuum canister on the dizzy, and recurving. EGR dilutes the intake mixture with exhaust gasses to reduce NOx emissions. It is not functioning at idle or anything over about 3/4 throttle, so it doesn't affect power; just cruise emissions. The resulting additional fuel it may require at cruise throttle may affect your MPGs in a bad way. Disconnecting the smog pump won't affect how the engine runs. It will free up about 1/3 hp. Disconnecting the PCV is not an option. First, its not an emissions device. Its there to keep the crap out of your oil and pull off blowby gasses. Not having one is just dumb ![]() Otherwise, the rest is probably vacuum lines for things like the hot start door in the air cleaner, the climate control, etc. Removing the catalyst may help power if it was a restriction to start with, but again it could tank MPG. The resulting loss of exhaust restriction will be accompanied by a leaner mix from the carb requiring you to "fatten" it up a bit. It will also increase your emissions profile by about 6 times. I'm not hugging trees, just providing counterpoint. Emissions control devices are NOT the reason for low power - the 7.8:1 compression, tiny cam, and pathetic heads are the reason for low power during the smog years. |

there is no point in removing the equipment, you wont get any increase in power and you might save the weight in the smog pump, what 8lbs? all you will be doing is creating a headache trying to get it to run nicely with out all of the equipment. my suggestion is replace all of the vacuum lines and the fittings! it will run wonderfully

"It is a federal offense to tamper with emissions control systems"
Yea Al Gore will come to your house(via: air conditioned Jet)and give you a lecture on going green and try to tell you how many times a day to flush your toilet and explain why they need more tax money outta your pay to provide green jobs................... So it is my professional opinion that you should throw the emmisions parts far back in the woods as so he doesn't see. |

Before legislation was enacted, people in Southern California were dieing from breathing the air. 78 Monte, you are too young to have witnessed it and I don't know if they taught this in school, but it happened on my watch. Here's a current photo. It was much worse 30 years ago. http://thebsreport.files.wordpress.c...pg?w=500&h=324 |
