Dwell

Waiting on my car manual to come in by mail. In the meantime, i'd like to see if I can keep my engine running. Can't get the car to keep a steady idle (engine keeps shutting off). I know the timing is off, and can't adjust the timing back because RPMs are too low to keep engine running. Believe my dwell is out of adjustment. Anyone know what my dwell is suppose to be set at?? 66 LeMans (326) all original engine except for the 4 Barrell Edelbrock (I think). Should be originally a 2brl, right?

The point dwell range was published at 28-32 degrees. Set your dwell first and then the ignition timing.

Dwell

I hooked up the dwell meter (+cord on the -coil terminal and -cord on a ground source) and adjusted the allen screw behind the little slide door on my distributor. I set the dwell to 30 on my dwell meter. Next, I dialed in my timing. Then with a little adjusting to the idle adjustment screw on my carburetor, she ran pretty smooth.
Thank you sir.

The pits!

Watch out for uneven wear on the points. When they wear, they usually will be uneven. You will either need to file them flat again, or replace. Even dwell adjusted right on doesn't mean you have optimum contact. Inspect the flat surfaces that touch on the points to make sure it's flat.

Unless you absolutely have to have an original system, suggest you upgrade and eliminate the points. They were the weakest part of the ignition systems before the mid 70's.

Not only are they constantly wearing and getting out of adjustment, they float at higher RPMS as they can't follow the cam lobes when turning too fast. And when the capacitor (aka condensor) shorts you lose everything. Electronic eliminates all of that AND adds more spark to the plug if you go HEI.
