Dying Cad?

I am working with a friend of mine on his 1971 Cad Sedan Deville...the problem with this thing is that it keeps dying on him..it might go one or 2 trips and be Ok and then act like a vapor lock or something and die..

When it does if it is allowed to set for 30-45 mintutes it starts up and is fine till the next time..

Now the replacement artists have been there done that and changed about everything in the fuel system that can be changed and he is about at the end of his rope on this thing..

Any Ideas guys..???

Has He checked the coil?

If it dies while he is driving check the gas tank. All the junk in the tank can clog the filter/screen/sock.

Does it have an hei ignition? I had a jaguar that would stall and then not start after it was running for a while. The module in the distributor was failing. It was working well enough to run when it was cold. When it heated up it wouldn't work anymore.
Check if there's spark during one of the "no start" times.

You need to check to see what is missing, fuel or spark then go from there. If it is spark related I would check the coil. They can die after heating up. Im not sure if you have electronic ignition or not so it is hard to say what else to look for from the spark standpoint. As far as fuel, I have seen the pickup plug up and cause this. it usually will be more prevelant with less than half a tank of gas. You said it happens sometimes, could that be when the tank is low. Basic troubleshooting and patience is all it takes. You have to check it when its dead to determine the issue. How do you get it restarted, does it need to sit for a while, if so how long.

This is going way out on a limb, if it hasn't been done check the PCV system. Way back when, there was a bunch of us that ran around together, the first one that got his license bought a 67 Ford Fairlane 289, we would go cruisin and about 45 minutes or so into our trip the car would quit running. If it sat for 30 minutes it would go again. It took about two weeks to find the PVC system was plugged and would kill the engine, once it was cleaned, we were good to go where ever.
Those were the days 16 years old and not a care in the world.
