e85 in '76 sb chevy 350

Could I run e85 in my sb chevy? It is a '76 and its all stock except the .480 lift cam... A friend told me I could, I wanted to see if you all had any ideas. Oh, and dont bother responding if you are a person who will act like I am stupid, because I dont want to hear it, all I want is a straightforward answer or guess.

You can run it but you will need to richen up the carb quite a bit as it take more E85 to operate than gas.

You'll need to richen main metering by 26 percent which is easy if this is a Holley as then if your running a#60 jet it needs to become a #76, you may may find that power jets and accelerator jets also need to be enlarged. If you're running a Q-jet then the most likely change is to the metering rods, check this URL for parts http://www.carburetion.com/rodshang.asp after checking out what the existing rods are in your carb contact them to discuss changes to richen the mixture. Don't expect this to be right the first time.

If this is a stock 76 engine, it doesn't have any compression. If you put in a cam with .48 lift, this is a lot more than the factory put in. Without changes to improve compression this engine cannot make effective use of the cam nor will it use E85 effectively, both prefer a lot more compression.

Also, with the high alcohol content of E85, you will need to change all the rubber components of the fuel system to alcohol resistant pieces, and possibly have the carbe plated, as the alcohol in the fuel becomes corrosive when it absorbes the moisture from the air.
