E85 compatible fuel filter, with fuel injection
I am working on switching over my Turbo, fuel injected, Ford to E85. I run Sunoco 94 right now with no-pinging up to 16 PSI on the stock engine, but I want more boost and want to be proactive with detonation safety. I have NO experience with alcohol so this is all new to me!!
So far I have the big fuel pump, fat 3/8" steel fuel feed line, computer tuner and huge 42lb/hr injectors.
I am looking for a recommendation on a good fuel filter that can handle alcohol (and if it matters) and up to 90PSI of fuel pressure.
I saw that universal fram filter in Jegs, and it say it can handle the pressure I need, I assume it's OK for alcohol being a racing part, does anyone see a problem with that? Any ideas?
just some background on the car, when it was all stock but with the turbo it made about 300WHP on 11PSI boost, since then I upped the boost to 16PSI, made a aluminum tunnel ram intake and increased the intercooler pipe size from 2" to 2.5", all to reduce restriction. it a pretty radical engine setup.
I've been playing with E85 for two years now and it has potential for performance applications but there are some things that have to be considered on a swap:
First you said you ran a steel fuel line? Better change that to stainless steel or you will start having problems with rust particles contaminating the fuel system. They plug filters and hang injectors open and cause general hate and discontent. The gas tank is another problem area if it's steel. Ethanol is hygroscopic meaning it attracts water. This water causes serious corrosion of steel. Ethanol also has corrosive effects on bare aluminum which can destroy it and cause the same particle problem. Stainless steel, some plastics(Teflon), and certain anodized aluminum are needed for the fuel system. Most fuel filters for performance alcohol use are intended for race engines with strict fuel quality control and use stainless steel mesh elements that only filter down to 100 microns. At least 40 microns is needed to stop all of the particles that can cause fuel system trouble. 5 or 10 microns would be better but I haven't found a high pressure, alcohol safe filter that filters that low yet. The best filter I've found is the Mallory 3181. It's a 40 micron alcohol compatible in-line filter for high pressure fuel injection that flows up to 500GPH.
Second it takes approximately 30% more fuel with E85 to make the same power as gasoline. You have to alter your fuel delivery accordingly. This also means that at the same power level your fuel tank will go empty way faster. This isn't a problem for some applications but can be for endurance racing where you don't have anymore room for fuel.
Third is that alcohol runs considerably cooler than gasoline and therefore needs more compression to make the same power as gasoline in a given engine. I'm not saying that an engine built to run on gas can't run ethanol, just that it won't make as much power as it could if it had more compression (or boost). The burn rates also require a complete ignition re-map to get power back up.
This barely scratches the surface of E85 for a performance engine, and I'm still learning as I go but I hope this helps..I think forced induction fuel injected engines would be a great place for this fuel to really make some power! I look forward to hearing your project shapes up.
That's quite the intake setup you have there! I was trying to figure out how that intake could be pressurised with the "air filter" visible inside the scoop like that, but then I realised hat's the intercooler! I am assuming the turbo is blowing in the back side where we cant see it in the pic and it flows directly through the core and into the throttle bodies. Pretty cool! I would love to see more pics of it, you should set up a photo album.
Ripple, Something you might want to see. After 3days of E85 testing it deteriorated an O-rang at my fuel rail and corroded the piss out of the aluminum AN fitting...The anodized parts held up better but the smallest scratch and they start to go to.
Also, I contacted Bosch about the ethanol compatibility of their injectors and they said that the EV6 types were ethanol compatible but that older injectors were designed to tolerate low levels for extended periods (15%) but the high levels in E85 would cause "a shortened service life" but that they intend to convert all of their current injectors "in the near future". Trying to pin him down on which and when was like trying to nail jello to a tree.
Delphi (Lucas) has sent out press releases stating all of their injectors are ethanol compatible but a press release is all the information I can get out of them. Nothing technical just PR..
Slow GTA, thanks for posting your experience. You have raised my concern on the corrosion aspects of this fuel however. My tank is steel, steel feed line, AN fuel fittings, bare extruded aluminum fuel rail and Bosch injectors. I would basically have to redo the entire fuel system. I was really counting on E85 being much less corrosive than methanol, which I understood to be the really bad fuel for corrosion.
My Ford chassis has a ‘flex fuel’ version, so worst case I could strip out the tank and fuel system and use as much as I could on my car.
I will check out that Mallory fuel filter, at what intervals do you service it and what do you find in it?
Big Mec, the turbo is mounted under the car and blows though an 80mm MAF sensor and a 65mm mustang TB. You correct identified the shaker hood scoop for the intercooler, I think that it looks good sticking out of the hood. That picture is a few months old and it looks different now. I looked that the photo album options of this website and it think it’s better just to post up the link to the album I already have. Nevermind the turbocharged jeep pictures in that album.

I went with the permacool universal spin-on filter. good for almost any fuel and 2-micron capacity. i will need that for all the junk that no doubt is in the tank. only problem is summit is on backorder and despite having waited 2 weeks already, I have two more to wait until they ship it out to me. frustrating, but what can I do.
the car will be able to run either sunoco 94, or E85. gasoline for the street, up to maybe 15PSI, and E85 for the track, which will boost to the limit of traction, maybe 20-25PSI. to get the computer to deal with the issue of needing more E85 that gasoline I plan on a combination of increasing fuel pressure and ajusting the fuel injector size in the computer, so they stay open longer.
the car is basically worthless for anything other than showboating, zooming around and spending money on, but thats OK, I need an excuse to escape to the garage on the weekend.
