How early are we talkin? Funny how every 283 you find came out of a Corvette....
I've got a '64 283 with a forged crank. Block's never been bored. I just need a chassis to put it in, any ideas? |

re: Early 283 block price check? Did I get burnt?
My cousins friend mikey who I bought it from told me that it came out of a corvette and it is a early block I told him it could have come out of a pick up but he didnt wana entertain that though.
Is there any web sites I can compare the casting numbers to , to find the year it was made? And the block has not been bored it is stock bore.Okay here is a continuation I just found out it isnt that early of a block because the casting number 3789935 could be from 60 - 67' so I am guessing it could be out of a vette but I bet it came out of a truck. |

Going by Mortec site numbers it is a 61 to 64 283 Go here ... http://www.mortec.com/castnum.htm To better determine what it really is ... look at the casting date and the engine ID number/VIN code.

So what is my block worth if I clean it up and have it spotless?

Worth the time, effort, and $$$ to build yourself a nice hi-rev screamer.

Ok JD I knew that
But is there any market for them and what would you be willing to pay for one if you were in the position to buy one? |

re: Early 283 block price check? Did I get burnt?
I couldn't really answer that for you, but others on here whom spend more time at swap meets and the like, most probably could. For as little as you paid for it it's probably worth it's weight @ salvage yard alone, and with being in original boresize it's likely you could find someone wanting to give you good coin for it if it were to check-out as being in primo shape. If it were me, I'd keep it and make plans for a hi-revver, then find a midsized car that came factory with a bigblock to put it in-reason being you could move it back a few inches for better f/r weight distribution, and with already having heavy-duty driveline and suspension you'd have a nice platform for a one-off "twisty-turny" homebuilt supercar. A guy I knew back from a tech school in Laramie,Wy. put a built-to-the-hilt 327 made to rev 10k into a '73 GrandAm that originally had a SD455. Mated it to a Doug Nash 5spd, moved the whole thing back several inches (home-fabbed engine and tranny mounts), put cut-down 3/4 ton truck coils in for springs, some well matched components to finish... and talk about a car for running hard on mountain roads,-WHEW... Bring extra shorts! Anyways;Build It-Enjoy It. You could even keep it conservative and make a good mpg smallbore v8 of it. -Regards;Jim.

I keep thinking that I would like to find a little older 2wd shortbed PU with a 4 speed to drop one of those motors in. It could be based on the same principles as the early 302 Z-28's, lightweight, low geared and rev to the moon.. |

I thought the same thing...somehow to Chebby guys that makes them "special" although they are no different than any Chebby 283( block wise). The date he posted later confirms it wasn't a Corvette engine, I don't think they used the 283 that late. Sounds like it could be a 307, I believe they were the same bore. The Ford guys always want to say that it is a Thunderbird engine, I'm a Ford guy so BIG DEAL. Over the years, with all the "Corvette" engines and "T-bird" engines people have, there couldn't be any of them with their original engine,LOL. |
