early Mustang pitman arm

The early Mustang pitman arm has a tapered stud, not the usual tapered hole. Also it fits the 1" steering box shaft, not the later 1-1/8" so the pete and jakes aftermarket arm won't fit. (Even if it did I would prefer a less costly solution.)

I was thinking of getting the Speedway cross steer tie rod end (#910-02999) and cutting off the stud end, leaving the threaded shaft with the tapered hole....

Is anyone running side steer with the early Mustang box and pitman arm? What was your solution?

I believe that there is an arm with the smaller hole. I have the larger diameter box with an arm from speedway, I can't remember if they offfered a smaller version or it was another supplier....but I think you should still be able to locate one. What year box is it?? I thought they went to the larger splined shaft about '67-8, when they went to "rag" joints to separate the shaft from the box. If you can't locate an earlier style arm , it should be pretty easy to pick up a later box fairly reasonable...I have 3. I think someone is even reproducing them.

I replaced the steering box on the wifes 39 Willys. The previous owner used a worn out Mustang box. I found a replacement box but did not have a pitman arms. I found a pitman arm on eBay that had the tapered hole and 1 1/8" for the sector shaft. When dealing with eBay make sure the seller measures for the 1 1/8 shaft. Some sellers don't know there is a difference. If I could get past history of my buys I would let you know the seller but eBay doesn't supply that for buys over one year.

Thanks guys !

Thanks for your comments, I read the descriptions on egay and learned a lot about these early Mustang pitman arms. I see what I need now.

Google helped too.... I was told mine was a 1965, but apparently it is early '67

I found this useful page, may help others:
