eBay buys Skype: buyers/sellers can talk to each other

After all the rumors, eBay is now officially acquiring Skype. Skype offers free voice communication over the internet ("phone calls", but just not on phones). The speculation is that you'll now be able to talk to potential buyers/sellers on eBay, for free, all through your computer. Looks like eBay really had to dig through the sofa cushions for spare change to afford this one -- the word is they'll be paying about $4 billion in cash/stock/benefits.

This could be very useful for car and parts sales through eBay.

Quote:
Buyers will gain an easy way to talk to sellers quickly and get the information they need to buy, and sellers can more easily build relationships with customers and close sales. As a result, Skype can increase the velocity of trade on eBay, especially in categories that require more involved communications such as used cars, business and industrial equipment, and high-end collectibles.

I've been using the skype telephone service for a while now. Very nice for making calls on the public exchange lines. The software was written by the same duo that created kazaa. I hope nothing really changes now that ebay has it, and perhaps it can become as popular as paypal in the near future. Unfortunately it is not very good to use on dial up, it requires too much bandwidth, but I could see it being used as the Ebay Instant Messenger (EIM kinda rolls of the tongue) with voice support for the broadband users.

I think ebay should have kept their money/stocks/benefits.

As a seller on ebay I really don't want random people viewing my item to expect to have a conversation with me about it. Fortunatly it's optional.
