Edelbrock 1404 & turbo?

Hi, this is my first post, so be gentle!

I've searched the site for info, but I can't seem to find what I'm after (but a load of other interesting stuff!)

I have a Mercedes 4.5 V8 engine from a 450SEL that's eventually gonna go in my poor unsuspecting Mercedes W115.
As standard, the V8 has fuel injection (Bosch K-Jet I think...), but I really want to turbocharge the engine as the compression ratio is a reasonable 8.8:1 which should be good for a low boost turbo.
If I did fit a turbo, this would probably mean junking the injection system, so I started looking at an Edelbrock 1404 carb. Thing is, can this be used with a blow-thru turbo set-up, or will it need sealing? Also, I think this has vacuum secondaries (correct me if I'm wrong), and I read in another thread that turbo's mess the vac system up.

So, my question is... Can I use an Edelbrock with blow thru turbo? If so, which model carb? (I chose the 1404 because it was closest to my headflow of about 320cfm)

Or, does anyone know if I could keep the injection system (with some mods) AND run the turbo? Bearing in mind I can't afford to buy a whole new injection system and mappable ECU etc.

re: Edelbrock 1404 & turbo?

you should really stay with fuel injection, especially since your intake is deilled for injectors and you have a throttle body allready on there... you should talk to a guy here that calls himself "turbo S10" he has fitted a turbo on a 383 stroker and has installed a DIY fuel injection, he is affiliated with the system that is a little more advanced than the megasquirt system. and you should be able to complete it for arround the cost of a new holley carb

send him a PM and your should be set...

Thanks for the fast reply.
Mercedes engines are really hard to modify cos there are no performance parts for them - everything I do I have to adapt from another car or fabricate.

Thanks again, I'll let you know how I get on

re: Edelbrock 1404 & turbo?

Just thought I update this. I got an email from Edelbrock - they say you can't use a blow-thru turbo with their carbs. At all.

Plan B: Maybe I'll just eBay the turbo and use a 1404 how its meant to be used!

re: Edelbrock 1404 & turbo?

you need to install a megasquirt fuel injection cpu, its really cheap, and can be had for less than 100Ģ all assembled, then retain all the MB intake, Throttlebody ets and just keep boost in moderation, (under 14 psi) send me a PM with your email and i can send you some links and pics..

ive seen a couple of 450 and 500 secīs with twin turbos here so it definately can be done..

re: Edelbrock 1404 & turbo?

I think with a set of injectors, FPR, pump, some plumbing, and a few sensors you could adapt the manual injection to EFI. The megasquirt will definately work for fuel and you could keep the existing timing control if you like. If you want to go a little more advanced, the vem-group.org Genboard would also work nicely. The megasquirt is definately much simpler and is a proven system, but the Genboard will give you MUCH more in terms of tuning and monitoring ability.

As for the Edelbrock, I would ditch it and go with a Holley if you want to do blow through. They are simple to modify and cheap on ebay

re: Edelbrock 1404 & turbo?

the problem of using a holley on a MB is that there is no manifold available, and the one on the car is allready set up for fuelinjection...

btw, on the genboard, is it possible to run eight peak and hold injectors in full sequential mode????

Yep, that is what I am doing now. I hope to get the V3.1 board final tested this weekend and if all goes well.....running. Still have some test to run on the WBO2 circuit before firing it as well.

re: Edelbrock 1404 & turbo?

Thanks guys! I will go for an EFI system to run the turbo's. From what you guys have said and what I've seen on the net fuel injection's better by far. In the mean time I'll try and pick up a Holley on U.S. eBay - the few that turn up on eBay.co.uk are overpriced, even with the postage from the states it's cheaper!

It's possible

Benzboy, my 6.9 is turbocharged. You can easily modify yours. Let me know if you are interested. In the pic attached, the turbo is off the car being rebuilt, but you can get an idea of the setup.
