Edelbrock Carb ID

Bought an 84 GMC w freshly rebuilt 350 (4-bolt). The intake is all Edelbrock, with (what seems) a 'bolt-on' 4-bbl carb. Carb has a small id plate, reading "1904" on drvrs side (top), elect. choke and 2 recessed adjustment screws on both sides of PVC.
I'm afraid the carb was "bolted-on", but left at that stage (barely running, leaking fuel, bogging, back-firing and smelling like a gas refinery).
1st question; how might I identify what particular model of carb this is?
2ndly; what are the basic adjustment procedures for tuning this beast?
Any help is greatly appreciated, as 5 mpg bites biggenz. Besides the backfires (thru carb, even @ idle) are very embarassing. So much for my ego, ennywez.
Happy 'holiday', GusTX

Also, thx for not harping on me about my 'typo', re; "PVC", vs. 'PCV'. I really do know the difference between poly-vinyl chloride and positive crankcase ventilation. They both taste terrible, but PVC is deadly above 250 degrees F, whereas the other doesn't hurt (unless ingested) until about 375 (or less?).
Yup.
