Elco fuel gage problem

1980 Chevy El Camino

I replaced the fuel tank level sender after insuring that the gage would go to empty by grounding the wire that connects at the tank. It appeared that the in-tank sender was defective. Dropped the tank, replaced the level sender, voila all works. That is to say that it worked for about a minute and failed open. Tested the wires again and the sender is open electrically.

OK, what am I missing?

Have you rechecked the ground wire on the sender? You need a good ground from the body of the sending unit to the frame.
