Electric fan's ?
 
Hello fellow hotrodders. I am having trouble to decide what's the right electric fan for me...
The main reason i don't know what to choose is because i am very limited to fan thickness, if i remember correctly max thickness i can run is 2.3/4"

I'm not sure what the size is on the radiator but i can measure it if you would like.

Here's the question, should i aim for a small (diameter) fan with lots of flow (cfm) or take a bigger diameter fan with a bit smaller flow rating ?

I'm going to run a electric water pump so this is going to be the only fan i'm going to use...

I used s 16" SPAL fan that is rated at about 2350 if i remember right...it is not their standard 16. This is used on a 350 v8 in a 50 chevy truck and is the only fan. BTW it is a puller type. Can't say for 100%, but i've been told several times that pullers are more efficient than pushers...?....

My concern was to cover as much of the radiator surface as possible...so i used the largest diameter with the thinnest profile. Cools great.

Where can you get these SPAL fan's ? and how thin is yours ?
Also i,m going to put this fan on the Grille side of the radiator...

I use two Flex-A-Lite fans with a boxed shroud.
Here are some examples or go to Summit and do a search for "Electric fans".
Get your rad and available space dimensions first.

You say you are going to put the fan on the "grill side" of the radiator, front I take it. Do you have a fan on the backside of the radiator?

No fan at the backside of the rad, just a electric water pump.
As i've read from this thread so far it would be better to aiming for the biggest fan i could use, rather than a small one whit more flow ?

if your fan is on the grill side you are going to run a pusher style fan and as barnescole said pullers are more effective. do you have any more information about what you are trying to do? what kind of vehicle is it? fan shroud no fan shroud, does it have an air damn. what type of radiator do you have. there is a lot that goes into choosing your fan and you cooling system setup. if your radiator is mostly square then one large fan may do the trick if its rectangular then two smaller fans may be needed. give us a little more info on what your putting it in and what you will be doing with the vehicle and we can help you a little better.

I have a Jeep CJ5 that i'm putting a BBC in. it will see limited street use but i'm also going to use it for sand dragracing and offroad.
The radiator measures 18.1/2" on the width and 19.1/2" on the height.
The radiator is 3 core and i'm not sure what it's from.
I think there's not a room for a shroud, but i'm not sure, I can't run puller fan because the water pump nose is just 1.1/2"-2" from the radiator.
The jeep had a Mild SBC with mechanical fan and std water pump and it never had any over heating issues...

This is with small block and as you can see there's not much space for a puller fan !!!!

Are you trying to do this with a long water pump or a short water pump on the BBC?? Pusher fan orientation takes away a lot of the cooling capacity, you can't push air nearly as good as you can pull it.

What about offsetting the radiator core into the grill/core support area to get farther from the engine?? This is done frequently in S-10 V8 and Ranger V8 conversions.

I have a Summit racing electric water pump on the BBC and the BBC with this Water pump actually measures 1/2 Cm shorter than SBC with long pump !!! it kinda amazed me...
As you can maybe see on this pic. I have one pice front end.

As with the SBC (not the one on the photos) i didn't have any heating issues at all... never. and that was with std water pump.

The summit pump flows 40 Gpm... which is hopefully plenty.

hope you guys can see any thing.
The fan blade on the sbc didn't have any clutch, it was just the fan blade (aprox 1/2" deep)

have pics of the fan, but they are too large to upload :confused: , i'll have to track down the part #, but SPAL fans are found at most street rod/performance auto...a quick google search will bring them up. mine is about 1 3/4 thick , i had the same problem with the water pump.

i was able to move the fan toward the top of the radiator, which placed the thickest part of the fan (the motor) above the nose of the water pump.

2 smaller puller fans at diagonal corners.

This will free up the center where the WP snout is

I have twin Spals on my 59 with a 454 and the pump snout sits right between the fan motors

What kind of fan cfm is needed for a 700 hp motor? I like the support brackets the mustang fans offer. The problem is that their single and I think I'll be needing a dual to cover up more of the radiator. I've seen the zip tie crap they offer, which looks stupid and wrong.

if u have a pep boys near ck it out.. they do carry fans. i got a 16" and i know it more then 2000cfm but can't recall exactly.. it like a tornado...its a puller too.. no difference on fans just wire it backwards for pusher or puller..

Mid 90's camaros had twin small fans mounted into a shroud, with space in the middle, they also unbolt from the shroud to allow to to mount them in the corners (as suggested above)

on ebay..... That's what I'm running on my 67, cheap powerful and available.
