What would some one care if there hood got hot? It is not a seat

Holley pumps are vane type with 4 vanes in the red one for sure. I ran a red one 5 years with out problems. Just make sure you use a GOOD filter before the pump.

Nascar does use mechanical pumps, but on a couple of cars I got to see in the garage being preped, they had an electric pump priming the mechanical one. At one time the mechanical pump was just an empty shell.

Humm I wonder if that is some of my problem. The only fuel filter that I know of on my car is after the fuel pump and is on the carb body. Maby that pump needs to be cleaned out and fixed up?

Basicly I'm working to fix my off idle stumble when cold problem. It dose it some when its warmed up but not near as much or as bad.

the insulation is there primarily for noise reduction. Not a big concern for hotrodders.....

Alright and your right not a big concern

Ony of my more car oriented friends told me it was for fire protection and my respons was "I dont plan on having my car catch on fire any time soon"

I think its just a form of fiberglass anyway. Not a big deal. Although you did remove that much weight from your car and you will go a tiny bit faster now! I removed mine because it was shredded and I didn't want it to get caught in the belts and bring the whole thing down.

Mine is in good shape but I would guess it dose weigh a good bit. I think I will take it off one of these nights before I go to work.

Definately get a filter if front of the pump. I ran the clear glass one with replaceable elements. I could see when it was getting full of crud. I also could tell when to NEVER get gas from some stations again, too.

Holley has rebuild kits for the pumps. Basically a new gasket. At one time you could get new vanes and individual pieces.

If your vanes are worn, they and the wheel that turns them should be available. Check out Holley's on line cat. to get the part number.

Thanks. the one that is on there is just the chevy factory pump right now. I will have to add a filter before the pump. What is a good one I could pick up at say autozone or advanced auto parts?

As nice as the clear ones are, the will only filter the big chunks, I have a filter from Summit, one of their house parts, but the Fram is the same type. About as big as a soda can with a huge element. I have had mind on for 6 months with no problems, but I haven't checked it. Before I had the electric pump and filter, I routinely changes the filter at the carb and I cut them open and say no real contaminates to speak of. I am sure If I were to check it I would be surprised what I found though. I have not had problem with getting enough fuel so I'm sure it's flowing fine.

Well last time I replaced the fuel filter at the carb it was so pluged it pushed in and twisted leaving about 1/4 inch around it for fuel to flow threw.

I'm geting so very sick of the off idle stumble and the some times 1-2 second throttle delay.

If this whole adventure is due to a really nasty fuel filter, I would reccommend using a good inline filter, but for the sake of horsepower, we'll talk electric. How long between changes of the filter? I have a holley as mentioned before, the big filters are nice because they cover so much surface area. I would also mount the filter in a position you can easily get at. Mine is not, and I wish it was. I have it before the pump, literally attached to it tucked up beneath where the backseat should be (El Camino, no backseat but there is a open storage space where it would be). I made my fuel "log" out of Angle Iron and bolted both pieces to it wit some flexible rubber (less than 2" long and less than a 1" gap) between them to compensate for the minor vibration the pump produces. It's bolted through the floorboard and you can hear it real well in the car. I don't mind the noise but it does get old. I would use rubber insulators on both sides of whatever you bolt them to for noise suppression. hope this helps some.

Well I dont think I will be switching to electric pump any time soon as the cost seems to far out weight the benifits for the engen I'm going to be using. The only thing I can think is that some of my off idle problems are maby because the mechanical pump has crap in it. Should the a filter be mounted at the same hight as the fuel line or can it be up higher?

There is a chance your pump may not be pumping enough, at which point you can get a good mechanical for less than $60. You can place a fuel filter inline in any spot that the fuel travels to carb. I would put one before the pump and put a new one at the carb. This will prevent any contaminate from destroying your new pump. Hope this helps.
