engine block desifiring help

i have a smallblock engine casting number 3756519, and the heads are 3731539 and the suffix is t522d. i think the suffix code is missing something. My major concern are the heads orginal to the block and is there a way to get the the date from when the heads were made?

howdy there

yes the suffix stamping code is missing a letter..

it 'should' be HD or HA or something similar to this..

1969 and older have two digit suffix stamping codes, 1970 and up were three digit.,

there is no way to know for sure if the heads are original to the block as there are no serial codes on parts.

you can simple see if they match in years and size application..

there are date stamping codes on these parts if you look on the bellhousing ledge across from the one that has the the 3970010 block casting code

and on the cylinder heads(between valve springs) usually, there are date codes. like A229 for example.

are you trying to restore a numbers matching desirable or rare vehicle or something ?

if not then no need to have factory matching parts.

mortec.com and nastyz28.com have the casting codes for you to decode and see there in a list,. very simple!

just click on the correct hyperlinks etc to get to the casting pages you need,

the block stamping code says 522 in which would be may 22 of whatever year the vehicle was that it was originally installed in.
and this would be the vehicle's model year

good luck!

D 1958 283 Powerglide 185 2 cars & truck
D 1960 283 Powerglide 170 2 truck & cars

3731539....57......283..........283 HP FI

The date code on the heads and block will look like this example:
C 12 8
C = The month A - Jan. B - Feb. Etc.
12 = The date of the given month
8 = The year.
So C 12 8 would be March 12th 1958. Most heads were only casted a few model years so it`s simple to match them up with the years they were casted.
