Post engine bolt hole to bellhousing is broken, is it ok?

I've got a 302 that I was planning on rebuilding, but during the process, I noticed that on the engine, one of the bolt holes where the bellhousing bolts on is broken. The broken one is on the left side of the block, furthest from the starter. Its a 6-bolt bellhousing.

Will this be a problem? I was planning on taking this block to a machine shop tomorrow, but if this is a big enough problem, I'll save myself the time and just get something else.

This a ford 302? I don`t see why you can`t weld the broken peice back on and have it machined/ ground down.

That sounds like a completely reasonable thing to do, but the problem is that I don't have the piece that broke off.

If it's one of the bottom bolts, I still wouldn't think it would hurt. Is this gonna' be a racer? I have left upper bolts out many times with no problems (Did I say that? ). Hey, thats one for the "Hotrod dictionary"!

OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT: Those left over bolts and brackets after a job is done.

I don't think it's a big problem. Why don't you take it to the machine shop and ask them?

Thumbs up

I wouldn't think it to be a problem, I've used bell housings and know a guy that used a top loader with one broken hole ( the top loader was behind a big block Chevy in a drag car).
