Hi, Im building a 1970 Chevelle. Right now it is about to come home from the paint shop. Anyway, I am trying to figure out which engine to put in my car. What I have already is a 1994 GEN V 454 block, crank, and rods, GM 502 rectangle port heads with 2.25 intake valves. The heads need new guides installed, and the stud bosses need drilled and tapped, but the seats are done and heads are surfaced. I need to purchase a ton of parts...machine work, pistons, cam, oil pan for car, intake manifold, carb, ignition, etc... $$$$$$$$$!!! Or, should I spend the $1500 that I have for a 2000 5.7L LS1 out of a 2000 Camaro? Either engine would need the bellhousing for my M21 four speed trans that I do plan to run. Also, the car has a built 4.10 gear 12 bolt rear end with Moroso brute posi unit. I have read mags that are making great power out of the LS engines. So, which one? Thanks

I think you should build the rat motor and put HEVY CHEVY on the windshield as well

While the LS engine would be new technology and cool, the parts to get it into the Chevelle and running will cost you more than finishing the BBC, probably a couple grand more. You have to modify the crossmember, special LS oil pan, mix and match the accessory drive(a combo of truck and Camaro pieces),and then you need the ignition controller/intake combo from MSD(assuming you are not going to try to keep the factory injection, a lot more work and $$$ if you want to keep that). It won't be as easy as the BBC, that is for sure.

I realize LS swaps are all the rage but nothing looks as good between the fenders of a '70 Chevelle as a Rat.

Never thought of having to mod the chassis. Well, it will probably be the rat then. Thanks

By the way, where do I post pics on this forum of my car?

Mouse or rat? RAT! No substitute for cu. in. And then there's the torque.

Thanks for all the help. The 454 project is my orig plan, I just had the opportunity to purchase the LS. It was just a thought. I am having a hard time figuring out why 454 pistons for the mark IV are listed different than for a GEN V. They both use the same rods...???
