engine choice 31 Ford sport coupe

Trying to decide what engine to run in my daily driver A sport coupe. At first I was thinking 4.6 police interceptor, or maybe a 5.4. Now im looking into a 5.0. I am targeting 300 hp. Ford is a must, Ease of parts availability is a plus . Maybe a mild cam(s), headers, dual 3", k&n, chip, nothing too serious. AOD trans and probably somewhere around 3.55 gears with a trac-loc. Any relevent opinions appreciated. Thanks, Paul

Small block Ford engines do not fit well in Model A Fords. They are too long.

Bull pucky!!!!! These kinds of statements are 1960's true, prior to different length water pumps, oil pans and headers, etc

SB Fords are actually 27 inches long vs the Chevy almost 28 (27.88 to be exact*) and are both 22" wide.

There is NOTHING difficult about fitting a SB Ford in an 'A' chassis. This is mine - zip, zero, nada problem fitting it in place - and it is ~2 inches set back - my choice to keep tho a TCI error. Complete with LONG water pump, 29" long plus had I wanted to go that way, enough room for a mechanical fan:

Agreed, SBF is not a bad choice. Good engine. LOTS of "goodies".

The two "coolest" street rods I've seen in years had a different "Fords"... One was a '32 CHEVY "5-window coupe" in a club full of '32 FORDS, all with SBC engines. It had a Cleveland in it... It's name? "Bad Attitude"... I LOVED it!

The other was more of a "rat rod" (before they were "cool"). It was a T-bucket with a 300 6 cylinder. Sounded a lot like an airplane... Drew a LOT of attention.

While the Windsor "family" is more plentiful (260s, 289s, 302s are also "Windsor" engines), the Cleveland is the ONE. For a small block, it's pretty hard to argue with the look, the power and the "cool factor". There are still MANY out there, and new performance parts are readily available through all "regular" sources.

Or, you could always go the "never send a boy to do a MAN'S job" approach. 460s are plentiful and relatively cheap. No other Ford engine has more potential, possible excdeption, 427.

Just some ideas.

Thanks IC and Mr P. I know they will fit, as my friends have done it. What I should have been more clear on is a late model 302, say 2000 or up. They are lighter and a little smaller than the modulars? From what I,ve been reading, there should be no problem wringing 300 hp out of a 5.0. It would seem the modulars are more plentiful and cheaper up here in N WI. Hard to make a choice. Right now I have the rails deriveted, boxing plates ready to be tigged, 63 T-Bird 9" rear narrowed to 56". Getting a triangular 4 link from Paul Hortons. The front has not been ordered yet, but it will be the Heidts superride.
Pros and cons - 5.0 vs Modular?

Modular motors are very wide; something to think about.

I don't know what your mechanical prowess is, but if you want EFI, there was a Ford coupe with a 'Coyote' 5L in it, built by one of the california rod shops.

It looked very cool but probably cost a kings ransom.
