Well, it DIDN'T come from your 68 GTO. The first character (2) means Pontiac division. The second character (1) is the model year - 1971. The third character (A) is the assembly plant - Lakewood, GA. The remaining six digits are the last six from the VIN of the car that motor was originally installed in. I don't know what models of Pontiacs were built at Lakewood in the 1971 model year.
