Engine Coughs when shut down

I have been an engine builder for 48 years now and recently viewed on this site a lot of questions regarding engines coughing or backfiring thru the carb.

There is a lot of possible answers here and I want to give to you all out there a possible answer. I recently saw that a gear head had this problem and was very confused with some of the answers that he received.
You must attack a problem such as this, one thing at a time. I noticed that he finally found his problem within the dist timing and that was mentioned to him several times.. This problem I have found in building a lot of race motors is that sometimes a person will purchase a sparkplug with the wrong heat range and that may cause a glo plug condition with the motor especially after you shut the motor down. This happens a lot with a newly built motor because the pistons and cylinder walls are clean and any trace of fuel will be ignited due to the plugs being too hot and glowing after shut down.

I think this site is just the thing a lot of gear heads need to get good info regarding their problem.
