engine hard to turn over by

ok heres the run down, used 350, from a suburban, put an edelbrock 2102 cam in it, i am trying to adjust the valve lash while the engine is on the stand, but it is very hard to turn over by hand, how hard should it be to turn by hand? i have a 15" long peice of pipe bolted to the damper that i am turning it with. is there any way i can have the valve lash so tight the valves are hitting the pistons? could i not have tdc right? please help me out here. thanks.
