well thats not at all what i expected, one thing that was odd tho, is the stamp looked brand new, while the rest of the motor looked not so brand new. kind of wierd.

this engine could be a 302 or a 350 used in corvettes, camaros, trucks, passenger cars, chevelles, novas and monte carlos from 69-79.could be a 2 or 4 boltblock. if the suffix code looks new then there is a good chance that its had some work done on it.i've run into this from time to time where poeple don't leave them alone.check the rest of the #s. there should be a # that runs perpendicular to the cast# the first part should be a letter, that will tell you the month it was built, the next will be the day of the month, then the year. if you are not sure just post it and i'll tell you if i can.

the heads aren't stock, does that mean that the suffix code is wrong?

the 3970010 blocks were used for many many years starting in 68, they were available as two and four bolt blocks they were used in everything chevy built, also boat motors. cast at Saginaw grey iron casting and trucked to flint engine plant on bristol and van slyke rd. used to watch thousands a day go by. serviced the plant 3 times a week and watched all the operations being done.

yes but an early (before 84) crate motor. check to see if it has the codes stamprd into the pass side front deck between the head and waterpump, crate motors only have one series of numbers as they were never installed into a vehicle, if there are two sets of no.s it came from a factory assembled vehicle. you can then tell what it originally came in by these no's.

try going to the website www.yearone.com
on the bottom left of their home page they have a decnet tool to help with VIN, Body, Eng, and other IDs. Maybe it will help. It helped me identify soem parts that taht had been swithed on a car i bought which turned out not to be so all
