I did it the second way, with the rotor pointing at 1, and the wire on the cap post pointing at 1, i am non HEI points style

You've heard this before I'm sure, but it really makes no difference what terminal is #1 as long as the firing order is correct.
You can reconnect the vacuum advance. It isn't likely to be the problem, but the engine needs to have plenty of advance, so hook it back up!
A points-type distributor can give you all sorts of problems. Has the dwell been checked? What about the plugs- they should be fresh, too.
Curious to see what the compression test tells you.
