since the 60's, oil has been formulated with cleaners that suspend dirt in the oil, so it can be pumped thru the filter and cleaned.. oils that are high detergent, have a lot of the detergents.. and non detergents do not have the detergents, oil would sludge up in the oil pan, and dirt would drop into the sludge. |

I picked up a 1990 Honda Civic about a month ago with the pavement pounding 1.5L sohc engine pointed the wrong way. It has over 180,000 miles and will make a nice winter econocar so I won't have to watch my Jeep rust away (they don't make Jeeps with the inline six anymore! It's an instant classic).
I can go do a compression test now, dump in a can of restore and come back in a couple weeks and run the numbers again. edit: Specs on this puddle jumping 'beast'... * Displacement : 1493 cm³ * Bore and stroke : 75 mm X 84.5 mm * Compression : 9.2:1 <compression should read around 129psi (14psi x rated CR) * Power : 92 hp @ 6000 rpm & 88 lb-ft @ 4500 rpm * Valvetrain : SOHC (4 valves per cylinder) Last edited by ChevelleSS_LS6 : 09-04-2008 at 10:24 PM. |

Well I hate to admit it but I once used this additive for over two years to keep an old 240 000km 1984 Ford Bronco II alive until I could rebuild the 2.8L V6 motor.
It worked and definetly gave better performance, however it seemed to need to be replenished every 3000km in this extemely worn motor. Oil consumption dropped in half and crankcase blowby nearly stopped! I actually had rigged up a "road tube" on that old Bronco because the blowby was so bad it would make the engine stumble when hot if I allowed the PCV to handle it. One thing I noticed is that the motor became a "Restore" junky because without the additive it was very obvious, it was a dog passing on the highway. Not sure it would have much effect in a non worn out engine, it didn't do anything for another car I had that was low miles. It works but isn't for every situation, it didn't cause any damage to the motor I put it in (I checked the old 2.8L out very carefully when I rebuilt it). The amount I spent on it would have went out the tailpipe as burnt oil anyway and it certainly kept the plugs from getting fouled and upped the passing power on the highway. Mileage went up also but memory fails me exactly how much. So add it all up, oil, plugs, poor performance/fuel mileage/power...seemed like a bargain to me at the time when money was tight and plugs were getting fouled every month which was a PITA. I don't use it anymore because all my vehicles have good engines but if your stuck with a beater and have to make it last another few months and are getting tired of changing fouled plugs every months at $2 each and the smell of crankcase blowby is making your eyes tear at every stoplight I say give it a try. |

I have an 03 Malibu that the lifters were rattling like crazy it had 171,000 miles. I changed oil and added engine restore and the engine got quite in about 10 min. Also i noticed more power and it ran 20 degrees cooler. The stuff absolutely work's.

Except for the last post and 1/2 of the one before that, I've not read any of this thread.
Years ago, I had a high mileage car, '74 Plymouth Satellite w/a tired 318. Used several different additives w/o any real noticeable difference. When I tried Restore I DID notice a difference. I used it from then on until I was rid of the car, so I don't know if there would have been other additives that would have worked as well. |

This product is incredible. On the can it says you'll notice the difference within 500 miles. I have seen increases in compression, oil pressure and performance. I recommend it to any of my friends with high mileage vehicles. I also use it in my motorcycle, John Deere yard tractor and motorhome generator. I don't know about the science but I do know improvement, it's a good product. |
