Engine run on

Hey guys i'v built a 383 stroker 10.82 to 1 compression the car is talking to me when I shut it down. the timing is set correct and I'm running 94 octane someone told me if I used a colder plug it my correct the issue.

Your thoughts would be appreciated thumper 33

It could be a few things so I suggest trying each one seperately and see if it helps before going to the next. Not necessarily in this order.

1. Carb fuel mixture needs adjusted
2. Idle is set too high. Try idle at 650-700
3. Timing may need retarded
4. Too high operating temp.
5. Gasoline containing alcohol
6. Spark plugs too hot

There are other reasons for run-on such as high carbon deposits in the combustion chambers. Sharp edges in machining processes can also cause run-on because they can cause "hot spot" so these should have been smoothed out during the rebuild.

What carb are you using and what temperature does the motor run?

Thumper33 05-17-2012 10:18 AM

The carb is the 650 mighty demon and at this time I have no temp gauge.

Thanks for the info I'll start at the top of the list and work my way down

I appreciate your thoughts

Another question for u I have a comp cam reverse grind 488/465 383 stroker what should my timing be set at and advanced timing be.

Thanks thumper 33

To expand on S10 Racers post:
Which cylinder heads do you have?
What exactly is your idle timing?
How was it set?
Do you have the correct timing tab for the balancer?
Which spark plug are you using?
What is your idle speed?

Greg T 05-17-2012 10:27 PM

To correct what S10 Racer said, your timing may need to be ADVANCED. If the initial timing is too retarded you'll have to open the throttle blades to maintain idle speed. Advancing the initial timing will allow you to close the throttle blades and still maintain the proper idle speed. You may have to limit your total mechanical advance, but I would start by setting the initial timing at about 18* or so and see what happens. As you do this, set your idle speed back down to about 750 RPM.

Thanks for correcting me, I had a brain fart

Engine run on

How much water should I use if I was going to try to get rid of the carbon.

Thanks thumper 33

Blazin72 05-18-2012 12:38 PM

If you just rebuilt the engine there should very little, if any carbon buildup...

Have you addressed any of the other issues previously suggested in this thread?

Thumper33 05-18-2012 12:46 PM

I bought it off a friend the motor was built about 5 or 6 years ago my first thread on this topic was incorrect my bad sorry.

Thanks thumper 33

Blazin72 05-18-2012 03:23 PM

Ok.... You still haven't said whether or not you addressed any of the suggestions/questions posted here. In

Thumper33 05-18-2012 03:41 PM

Tomorrow I'm going to start from the top of the list and work my way down I'll re post some time tomorrow.

Thanks for all of the suggestions

Hey guys with the idle turned down to 650 up 700 the run on goes away the other issue I have is it bumps back up to 900 to 1000 any ideas what Taft is from the carb is 650 mighty demon.

Thanks thumper 33
