What i found out about your motor. If it is correct. 17J1153JB
1- chevy 7- 1977 J- built in Janesville 11530- production sequence of VIN. can't find anything on the JB. Normally the last letters tell what car it was in. might check and see if the JB is right. I know the motor 3970010 was put into cars, trucks and vettes. 327 and 350 hp- 185 to 370, 2 and 4 bolt mains, |

I checked in my chiltons 1965to1972 book engine identification code letters JB= 1969 8cyl 396 cu.inc. type PG-powerglide transmission listed under Camaro engine identification only.in this book. A typical vehicle serial number when broken down. MFR body style year assyplant unit no. 1 5645 8 f 100025 sample for interpertation only. Good Luck

Check out this site; <a href="http://www.yearone.com/updatedsinglepages/Id_info/engine_id.htm" target="_blank">http://www.yearone.com/updatedsinglepages/Id_info/engine_id.htm</a> it shows your block number in the example but I have not found the breakdown of numbers. If nothing else it will frustrate you a little more.
I think your 17J11530 jb is a vin number not an engine code. If JB was in the engine code it would be a 1969 325hp 396 Camero with automatic trans DZ denotes 69 z28 Camero with 302 Found another site that says that 3970010 is a 69 302 or 69 thru 80 350 so I guess the only way to know for sure is the engine code as note on the site I gave you. If 17J11530 is the vin than it is a 1977 chevy out of Janesville probably making it a 350. Don't you just love the research! Just wondering? is this the stamped no# on the right front shelf (passenger side) of the engine? It would be just below the head.( in front face of motor)
I thought i had a 68 302 untill i found and broke down the suffix code. Hope it helps. Let us all know what you find out will ya? Slider in Wa. |

I found this but pretty much the same stuff:
3970010 350 69 Corvette Late 69, 4 Bolt Main 3970010 302 69 Camaro Z/28, Late 69, 4 Bolt Main 3970010 350 69-79 Truck 2 & 4 Bolt Main 3970010 350 69-79 Pass, Chevelle, Camaro, Nova, Monte Carlo 2 & 4 Bolt Main 3970010 350 70 Corvette 300, 350, 370 HP Bolt Main 3970010 350 71 Corvette 270, 330 HP, 4 Bolt Main 3970010 350 72 Corvette 200, 225 HP, 4 Bolt Main Need another set of numbers to identify for sure. 17J15300jb is to short for a vin number. Still looks like a 350 truck block to me. |

I want to thank all of you for your inputs on this. Yes, it is a stamped number on the pad below the right side head. I will look at it closer to see if I made a mistake and let myou know what I find out. I am pretty sure it came out of a Chevy van which is long gone. Would be nice to know exactly what year it is. This engine supposedly has only 44,000 miles on it!!
Thanks again!! |

You can easily differentiate between a 302 and a 350. Just pull the pan and check the crank. The casting number will tell you the crank info and that combined with the block casting number will tell you about the engine.
