Question engine serial number location

a friend of mine bought a 1966 mustang with a 5.0 engine . the engine runs poorly.so i put my card reader on it to try and see what the engines computor had in it for codes,as i began to enter
the reader promts he was unable to ansewer my ?s.( i was not able to use the vin number of the 66 ) where exactly on the block would he find the engine serial number, the date code or anything else that would tell him what year this engine is and what it came out of ?
thanks

Don't know about Ford's. But sometimes it is in the lifter gallery on the block casting, or on Chevy's it's just before passenger side head on a small lip on the block. commonly painted over.
I know this probably doesn't help you much since it's on a ford:-) But *shrug*.

Code reader on a 66?..................don't think so. I thought it was a misprint, but since you typed it twice, I figure it's not.

Code readers are for computer controled cars............came in around 87-88.

Also, the 66 Mustang had a 289, not a 302 (5 litre).

Assuming that you didn't misprint that would mean that someone installed a late model 5.0 fuel injected engine in the '66 stang. Older Ford engines had the number on the block behind the starter.
