engine shutting on and off when turn signals are used.

Hey guys, remember this if you respond: I am totally ignorant about electrical stuff. Now, I know something is wired incorrectly, but what I need to know is where do I start to look? I just can't afford to take the truck to a shop but I'd like to be able to use my turn signals. Thanks.

It would be an incredible piece of information to know what vehicle you're referring to.

Well guessing that you're talking about your '54 Chevy truck with an '80 C-10 chassis and 350 SB engine, the first guess I'd make based on the limitted info is that something is shorting to ground with the turn signal wiring, and when you turn on the turn signal the short drops the system voltage enough to shut off the ignition or something.

But it sounds odd though as you describe getting good showings at car shows, and it looks clean so here's questions that would be helpful:

You've described that you used the frame and motor from the C-10, how did you do the wiring?

Is this a problem that started recently or has it been there all along?

Do the turn signals work properly when the motor is not running?

Has anything been changed recently?

Does the turn signals affect anything else, like the radio? Does the radio do anything if you run the radio with the engine off and the turn signals come on? Or you could check the brightness of the headlights, do they dim when you turn on the turn signals?

Usually a short to ground tends to make the wires hot and melt insulation, do you smell anything burning?

By golly I thought everyone knew exactly what I was talking about. Sorry about that. Yes, it's the 350sb. The wiring was replaced using a Highway 15 Wiring Kit when I did the build but I didn't do it myself. I honestly don't know when it started. The turn signals and the four-ways work the way they should. And I don't smell anything burning. I'll have to check out the radio and headlights and stuff like that but I'll have to get back to you on that. Thank you for your interest and good questions.

As it's been said before, make sure all your grounds are good.
