engine stand

OK, no laughing. I need to purchase an engine stand to rebuild my 350. HF sells several - 750lb max, 1000, and 2000. Which do I need? How heavy is an engine? Thanks!

I get the heaviest. No matter what you get, it will flex the engine stand and make you wish you got the heavier one

Engine stand

The 1000 # will work OK,the 750 # is a POS and not very stable but if you think down the line Big Block?? get the 2000.Having one tip over on your tootsies is no fun and not worth the damage to an already costly engine.

I purchased the 1000lb model from HF. With my complete Fastburn 350 on it the flex was noticeable. I fabricated some braces and welded them on from the upright to the lower side pieces and the lower piece directly under the engine. They firmed up the stand considerably.

Make sure it has at least 4 casters - the cheapies have only 3. Even a headless SB 351W Ford is a heavy chunk of iron to try to catch if it decides to tumble. My Summit cheapy (HF wasn't available in 1985) is now modified and reinforced after a session of catch-the-engine.

The middle size one with 4 wheels works good for a SBC - wouldn't go any lighter - think they are on sale about once a month for $40 or $45.

spend the extra cash and but the heaviest built one, it will make you happy yrs down the road. a flexing floppy non steady engine stand makes you nervous the whole time a engine is hanging on it. look for a old one someone bought or built yrs ago.


some info here Summit Engine stand on the 2nd page of that thread is a engine stand my uncle made yrs ago. theres pics of my home made engine stand (its had SBCs BBCs & a pontiac 389 & 400 and Ford 390, Buick 455 on it), looks like the upright neck was fastened to the floor in a factory or machine shop at one time. it has wheel bearing type bearings in the neck. it has a big type wing nut (wing nut is a factory piece that a 3/4 or 7/8 threaded nut with 4" wings) but loosen the wing nut you plus theres a spring loaded leaver that catches in notches on the back of the neck.


look for a heavy duty manufactured or home built engine stand with bearings in the neck.

only thing I don't like about my engine stand (pics one comment up) my uncle built it yrs ago and he was 6'4" + tall so the engine stand is real tall for me i'm just 6' tall) tall torquing heads. but I can live with a Tall Heavy Duty Engine Stand

I liked this idea but have never used one B4.

I had issues with the 1000 lb one. I just didn't trust it it flexed so far.
I ended up making a new back plate.

Looks like a nifty idea, but you're not going to like having to step over the legs of the cherry picker to get to the block.

Definitely get one which 4 casters. It is much easier to do a motor. The 3-caster ones tip over real easy

my dad has a 3 wheeler 750 # HF, and it's questionable at best, with a 350 w/o intake and water pump, it wasn't flexy but seemed mighty tipsy. it's only had 1 engine on it, only used to hold the engine to take off intake, oil filter adaptor and water pump, for his 350 crate motor, so I guess it served it's $35 purpose, rental would have cost that.
