okay my uncle has a built 327 we are putting in our chevy Monza. the motor has not been started for quite a few years. oil was still in it so I drained it and took the oil pan off to look at the internals to see how they look and they still look brand new. he wants to build and engine stand to make sure its still runs alright. does it really make sense to build a stand and waste more time or should we could just put oil in it and get it ready to go and put it in the car to start it. its not seized up or anything so why not just put it in the car and get it hooked up and start it?

well we are both calling shots on this project he works a **** load so whats the point of waiting on him to build a stand if we can just get it put in the car?
Is it your motor or his motor? You asked for an opinion, I'm giving you my opinion. If you don't like my take on it, do whatever you feel it is that you have to do.
well that still didn't answer my question im just wondering if it would hurt to get it put in and start it. I don't mind building a stand if he wants to im just trying to save some time
Put it into the car to start up and check out, pulling an engine is only a couple hour job compared to making a stand and the hassle of hooking up everything.
buy an engine stand for less than $100.oo,shore it up and run engine. Could be running in a couple hours.Make sure cam doesnt go sour and then stick it in your Vega
Put the motor in the car............prime the oil pump and watch for pressure on the gauge and oil on the rocker arms. button it up and start it. If you're going to build lots of motors in the future then the run stand is a good thing to have. If not.waste of time and money...
Yupp I have an old distributor with the gears cut off of it to prime it and yes I know the compression ratio and type of gas it takes! Thanks guys if I don't have to put it on a stand I wont and that'll just get me one step closer to getting it out on the road ?
No this car I have two motors to build other than that I probably won't be building any more with my uncle on it so I didn't really think there was a point for it either. Just trying to save the time and money
A test stand, like any tool, is something you pay for once and enjoy the benifits of owning it for a lifetime if not abused. On a fresh rebuild it's much easier to retorque the heads on the stand. Many of your hotrodding buddies might bring a 12 pack or a little cash to give their motor a test run before install. I never met anyone who regretted owning one.
Every engine I ever built I used my self made run in stand. I use it for break in, check for leaks and other adjustments. I would not build an engine without it. Cost me left over scrap from a large trailer refurb job I did for someone. Maybe 75.00 total including the used industrial castors with feet to lift the wheels off the ground. Radiator and electric fan were junk pieces someone was throwing out. It is so stable, no issues at all at any RPM.
could of you guys post up a wiring diagram for my stand it already almost done and motor is almost ready to go on. my uncle knows how to wire it up but I would like to know the basic understanding on how to wire it up if I have to in the future. thanks!
