Fresh rebuild or an engine that's been in storage, or ?

Priming the oil system, using the correct lubricant additives, coating the cam lobes/lifters w/break in grease, etc. are all important. If the cam is new the engine cannot idle for about the first 30 minutes, engine speed varying and above 2000 rpm.

A page w/info on prepping/starting a rebuilt engine can be seen here.

Good luck.

Engine break-in

There are several brands of break-in oil. ROYAL PURPLE BREAK-IN OIL, Brad Penn BREAK-IN OIL, COMP CAMS BREAK-IN OIL. I like the Royal Purple line best. After break-in they have a High Performance Street Motor Oil with a high level of zinc/phosphorus anti-wear additive.
