I"m looking for A engine test stand. The model I like ( but can't remember who makes it) has a gear reduction crank, on the engine mount end, to do assembly work. Then it has another module, that slides into the first module, with the radiator, gas tank, battery etc.
I first saw it at DesMoines Goodguys, two or three years ago. Any other universal units???? If not I will fab up my own.
Thank's Dave Tallant Hot Rods KC Mo.
I made one and it looks very much like the one on the home page . But the one I built doesn't fold up . I don't know that guy from the home page but . If any one does let him know that the wheels used are not up for the task ! I Do not want to see some one get hurt ! But it is real cool and its looking great .
You might be talking about the one I built that folds up. The wheels are not meant to move it with the engine in place. It's only meant to move the stand unloaded. (sort of like a hand truck) Chances are the wheels will be changed if need be. They are only on there with some long bolts welded to the bottom of the steel, easy to remove if needed. I have had an small block engine on it already and have moved it with those wheels! It's not complete yet. There is still some tweaking involved. But I will take your suggestion and perhaps change things as needed. Thanks for the input. Keep an eye on the page... Next is the battery tray, a 5 gallon plastic gas tank that I bought at a swap meet with a GM EFI pump built into it, going to bend up a stainless piece of sheet metal for the gauges and such. Lastly is the radiator and electric fan. Thanks for the input! Keep it comin!
here is the one I am building . It has 4" heavy wheels under all 4 corners . And will use a 1958 Chevy radiator . I am also using rubber mounts so it will not shake to much . And street rod headers . Now I am making the exhaust pipes for it . I will run 2" turbo mufflers . It rolls real nice .
Nicely done. Like the idea of the rubber mounts, I thought about using them, but as I recall from running engines on a pallet, they don't move much when running unless something is wrong. The bell housing is also mounted solid to the bottom rail. I could always add in the rubber motor mounts if needed I am not sure if I am going to use headers or factory manifolds, I guess it could go either way. Maybe I will make a set of mufflers for both, this way I can test both!
If you get a chance, take a look at the stand posted by Mustangsaly. The wheels on it look like cheap casters (I am sure those are worse than my lawn mower wheels!) The supports for the wheels look really thin.
Has anyone bought one of these?
I'd be interested to see if any changes were made to it, on closer inspection it looks like it's cheaply made (for the $250 price tag) almost looks like the cheap engine carts you can buy at the shows from the Chinese tool vendors (I own a couple of those as well, but welded them together because they start to collapse on themselves from the weight) Those old tin cans can't keep up with the weight :nono:
Also for an exhaust I have a set of ram horn manifolds that I may use . The good and bad thing with my test cart is that its compact . That radiator from the 1958 Chevy is the perfect size for this cart . Let me know if you have any more ideas or updates for your cart or mine .
I built mine out of wood. Able to support engine, trans, fuel tank, radiator, gauge panel, and battery box. Works well and doubles as a place to keep the engine when its not in the chassis.
Pictures are in my project journal. They should be on page 5...
I think I may have found the steel to use, and it's the best price known to man, free. Thing is, I'm not really sure about using 1" square stock. All the lengths are 36", and there's a seemingly endless pile to get. I'm taking all I can fit in the shop. My ultimate hope is that I can just use more pieces to compensate for the smaller size. You guys got any thoughts?
In a while, Chet.
