Engine starts, won't run..

when key is released.

Changing the wiring harness in '71 Chevelle, took the old butchered up one out and put newer one in. The engine will start, but shuts down as soon as I release the key. Anyone have any ideas?

how are your wires connected at the starter solenoid... you need to have the wire for the ignition r side of the solenoid, otherwise its only hot in the start position, which would explain your problem

To clarify the previous post, there are two wires from the ignition switch to the distributor. In the START position the wire provides full battery voltage to the coil for easier starting. In the RUN position (when you release the key) there is a resistor wire that drops the voltage slightly to let the points live longer. Something is wrong with this second wire, either it's broken or mis-connected.

If the wire turns out to be OK, then the problem is the ignition switch, but that's less likely.

Wiring

Did you change the harness in the column? Is it the original column and you just plugged in the GM connector to it?

Does this car use points of has it been upgraded to electronic ignition such as HEI?

If you haven't done so take a test light and check the ign wire to the coil with the switch on. if that doesn't show power back track to the switch. Note, the tilt and non tilt ign switches are reversed and won't interchange.
