Engine startup
Hi Guys & Gals,

I need some advice on starting an engine that was professionally built about 2 years ago. This engine has been in my son-in-laws garage for that length of time now we're ready to put it in his car. The advice I need is how to prep the engine for that first startup. Any advice will be appreciated. I've been away from this too long.

Have fresh oil in it and clean plugs. Make sure you have enough coolant in it.

I would put a little oil in each cylinder and turn it by hand, to make sure it is free.

Next, with all the plugs still out, I would turn it with the starter..........That will build uo some oil pressure and get oil going throughout the engine.

Put the plugs in, check for spark and make sure timing is close. Start her up.............

I had a pretty good idea that what you suggested is the way to do it. I just needed some reassurance because the builder freaked me out. He said, "If you don't put this motor in and start it soon, if you wait too long, on startup there's a chance you'll wipe the cam out." Needless to say, that freaked me out. I also thought he was full of s... If I do as you suggested, take my time, and cover all the bases, I should be OK.

If the cam has never been need to run it at 2000 rpm plus for 20 min or so. He does have a point. When a new cam is installed, they put on a breakin lube. Hopefully, it hasn't all fell off of it........

You may want to check this out. The easiest way might be to pull the intake and pull the lifters out. You can then see the cam lobes. Putting some breakin lube sure wouldn't hurt.

After running it for a short time, change the oil

My suggestion would be to go to any GM dealer and get a can of "EOS" oil additive and add it to the engine. It's great for first start AND for cam breakin.

Then i'd get an oil primer and drill and yank the dist. and oil prime the engine. Once you get pressure, turn it manually a few time to insure that its fully lubed. The EOS will do an excellent job of lubing the cam and lifters, which are the most prone to suffer damage when new.

After it's primed good, cold time it and put the dist back in and fire it up! Keep the rpm's at 2000 for atleast 20 minutes.
I usually fire new engines outside so if there are any leaks, it doesn't make a mess in the shop, AND should you need to run the hose on the radiator to keep it cool, it won't make a mess either. Important thing is to keep it running for that first 20 minutes or so.

I was hoping there was a way I could do this without taking the intake off, and the lifters out.

If it's primed good and you see oil coming up both sides out the rockers, you should be good to go.
