Hi, I have a 1938 Dodge Panel Truck that needs a V8 engine, tranny, and rear end that works together. I am a beginner at this so your suggestions will be greatly appreciated. What size Mopar V8 (318,360, etc.) what tranny and rear end ratio. The truck is a shell and I am starting from scratch. The original engine was parted out. This will be used as a driver. Thank you in advance.

Look for late 70's or early 80's New Yorker Or Diplomat. They would make a good donor car,Front clip disc brakes power steering v8 auto trans and rear end. I used one for my 36 the whole car running and driving only cost me 450 the body was rusted all the way to the frame but I didn't need it so it didn't matter. Mopar in a Mopar, Chevy in a Chevy, Ford in a Ford.My .02 cents

What was the displacement ?? 352 I think. The Hemi from the early 60's. Lots of preformance parts for them, and they're way cheaper the the 426. Just hard too find now adays. Add a 727 behind it and a Dana 60 rear and you're good too go.

Actually that would be the early hemi from the 50's not 60's. That was the 426. That said, one of the mid 50's Dodge or DeSoto early hemis would fit your engine compartment and can be hooked to either a 4 speed or torqueflight (GM TH-350 as well) using an adaptor. I wouldn't go with one of the Chrysler hemis since they're larger than the Dodge and DeSoto motors and would be a bit harder to shoehorn in your fairly small engine compartment. Which rear end depends on what brand you want to use. If you want to keep it all Mopar then possibly a rear from a Dakota would be around the right width.
